MIKE GOLDBERG is the weekday afternoon classical music host on VPM Music (93.1 and 107.3FM) and serves as the station's Coordinator of Classical Music Initiatives. You can hear his "Afternoon Classical" shows from 2PM until 6PM, live streaming at vpm.org. He also hosts "Breakfast Classics with Mike Goldberg" Saturday and Sunday mornings from 8AM until 10AM. Mike is also currently the meteorologist on WTVR-CBS 6 News in Richmond, VA Saturday and Sunday evenings, as well as Fridays at 11PM.
Mike has extensive weather forecasting experience across the state of Virginia. He has previously been seen on the DCW50 News at 10 in Washington, DC, WAVY-TV (NBC) and FOX 43 in Hampton Roads, VA, WRIC-TV (ABC) in Richmond, VA and WSET-TV (ABC) in Lynchburg, VA. Other TV experiences took him to WHEC-TV (NBC) and WROC-TV (CBS) in Rochester, NY, as well as WMGC-TV (now WIVT-ABC) in Binghamton, NY. He's even appeared on The Weather Channel as a guest meteorologist! Mike is a member of both the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society, holds the NWA's Television Seal of Approval, and is recognized by the AMS as a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM). He has also served on the Broadcast Meteorology Committee of the NWA for over 20 years and was selected as the organization's Member of the Year in 2018. Mike has received an Emmy Award as well as several nominations in the Capital/Chesapeake Bay Region. Holding a Certificate in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University, he completed additional studies in meteorology and climatology at Rutgers University and Portland State University.
Mike is always out in the community, promoting science education in the schools and presenting talks to various groups of all ages. He has served as a judge for the Virginia Science and Engineering Fair and the Metro Richmond Science Fair, and has been the Master of Ceremonies for various events held by the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Arthritis Foundation, American Diabetes Association, Commonwealth Catholic Charities, Richmond Vegetarian Society, Richmond SPCA, Richmond Animal League and Cat Adoption and Rescue Efforts.
Turning to the music world, Mike holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Clarinet Performance from the world-renowned Eastman School of Music in Rochester, and remains active as a professional musician and teacher. Highlights of his musical career include performing with the original Broadway production of "Into the Woods" and touring the major concert halls of the Northeastern U.S. and Canada with trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and the Eastman Wind Ensemble. He has also recorded for CBS Masterworks. Here in Richmond, Mike is the founder and Artistic Director for Crescendo, a professional chamber music ensemble, and has performed with the Richmond Symphony, Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra, University of Richmond Symphony Orchestra, Commonwealth Winds, Richmond Symphonic Winds and the Richmond Chamber Players. Also an accomplished conductor, he is the Music Director of the Central Virginia Wind Symphony, a group of the most talented high school musicians in the region. A strong advocate for music education in our schools, Mike serves as Adjunct Instructor of Clarinet at Randolph-Macon College and maintains a private clarinet studio while teaching at Colonial Forge High School in Stafford County.
An avid animal lover, Mike is dedicated to helping local animal adoption and welfare groups. He produces and hosts the "Paws for Pets" segments on CBS 6 and has served on the Board of Directors for the Henrico Humane Society. He has also received a Guardian Angel Award from Save Our Shelters for outstanding contribution to animal welfare in Virginia.
